Days after a woman autorickshaw driver was found dead in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested her lover after a post-mortem report confirmed that she was shot dead, officials said on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Anita Chaudhary, the wife of Dwarka Chaudhary. Initially, police received information around 2:30 am about a road accident in which the autorickshaw driver was allegedly crushed under her vehicle. Her body was sent for post-mortem examination.
However, the case took a serious turn when the post-mortem report revealed that Anita had died due to a gunshot injury. Following this, her husband lodged a complaint accusing three people of murdering her.
Police identified the accused as Mukesh Jha, his son Shivam, and his brother-in-law Manoj. Investigations revealed that Mukesh Jha had been in a relationship with the victim for the past six to seven years and that a dispute had recently arisen between them.
Shivam and Manoj were arrested on Monday evening and later sent to judicial custody. Mukesh Jha, the prime accused, remained absconding, prompting police to announce a reward of ₹25,000 for information leading to his arrest.
On Friday night, acting on a tip-off, police attempted to apprehend Mukesh Jha. He allegedly opened fire while trying to flee, following which police retaliated, injuring him in the right leg. He was subsequently arrested and admitted to a medical college for treatment.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to killing Anita, claiming he felt betrayed in the relationship. Police said further investigation into the case is ongoing.
