Ghaziabad police have dismantled a large counterfeit medicine operation after the Himalaya Wellness Company reported fake versions of its widely used liver supplement, Liv.52, being sold in the market.
The complaint, filed on January 3, indicated that counterfeit products were being produced and distributed through local shops. Based on the information, authorities registered a case at the Muradnagar police station and initiated an extensive probe to track the supply network.
Investigators found that the racket relied on high profit margins and a multi-state manufacturing setup. Fake tablets were allegedly produced in Haryana, while packaging materials such as wrappers and boxes were procured from Meerut, helping reduce production costs.
During questioning, suspects revealed that each box of counterfeit tablets cost roughly ₹35&ndash;40 to prepare and was supplied to retailers for about ₹110&ndash;115. The genuine product carries a maximum retail price of ₹280, allowing the accused to attract shopkeepers with higher margins while selling the product at a lower rate.
With assistance from the SWAT unit, police conducted a technical investigation that led them to multiple suspects, who later admitted their role in the scheme. Around 50,000 fake tablets were recovered during the operation.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and that efforts are underway to identify others connected to the network and examine the full scale of the operation.
