West Bengal Police arrested six Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian agent from Murshidabad district on Thursday for illegally crossing the border into India.
Acting on specific intelligence, officers from Raninagar Police Station conducted a raid in the Katlamari II Gram Panchayat area, leading to the arrests.
The detained Bangladeshi individuals have been identified as Mohammad Abdulla (20), Ketabur Ali (26), Kamaluddin Rahaman (28), Kalimuddin Rahaman (25), Mohammad Salim (37), and Mohammad Juel Rana (24). They reportedly hail from Chapai Nababganj, Rajshahi, and Feni districts in Bangladesh.
The Indian national, identified as Asrile Seikh (29), a resident of Raninagar, was arrested for allegedly facilitating their illegal entry.
A suo motu case has been filed at Raninagar Police Station, and all seven accused were presented before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) at Lalbagh Court. Police have sought seven days&rsquo; remand for further investigation.
Authorities said the incident is part of a larger pattern of illegal cross-border infiltration in Murshidabad and other districts sharing international borders with Bangladesh. Similar arrests have been made in recent weeks.
"Increased surveillance is now in place across the district, particularly in border villages. Locals are also being encouraged to report any unfamiliar faces in their areas," a senior police official said.
On July 20, eight Bangladeshi nationals and three Indian facilitators were arrested from separate locations in the district in a similar case of illegal entry.
Murshidabad district, known for having the highest Muslim population in West Bengal, shares a porous border with Bangladesh, making it a hotspot for infiltration attempts.
