Apple has appointed veteran artificial intelligence researcher Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of AI, marking a major leadership shift in the company&rsquo;s rapidly expanding AI division. 
Subramanya replaces longtime executive John Giannandrea and will report directly to Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi. 
He will oversee critical areas including Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation.
Apple CEO Tim Cook thanked Giannandrea for his contributions, noting his role in strengthening Apple&rsquo;s AI capabilities and setting the foundation for future innovation. 
Cook welcomed Subramanya to the leadership team, highlighting his &ldquo;extraordinary AI expertise&rdquo; and emphasizing that AI continues to be a core element of Apple&rsquo;s strategy.
Subramanya joins Apple after serving as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft, and previously spending 16 years at Google, where he led engineering for the Gemini assistant. 
Apple described his combined background in AI research and product integration as essential for future advancements, including the company&rsquo;s upcoming Apple Intelligence features.
John Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018 after leading AI and Search at Google, has been central to shaping the company&rsquo;s AI and machine learning vision. 
Under his leadership, teams built and deployed key technologies across foundation models, search, knowledge systems, and AI infrastructure. 
He will remain with Apple as an adviser until his planned retirement in spring 2026.
