Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has stirred a political storm with his sharp critique of dynastic politics in India, a move that has handed the BJP fresh ammunition ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls. In an opinion piece, Tharoor questioned the &ldquo;family business&rdquo; model in Indian politics, warning that the power of surnames, feudal loyalties, and the absence of internal democracy continue to weaken political institutions.
&ldquo;The influence of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty is bound up with the history of India&rsquo;s struggle for freedom,&rdquo; Tharoor wrote, &ldquo;but it has also cemented the idea that political leadership can be a birthright.&rdquo; His remarks, though couched in a broader critique of political culture, are being seen as an implicit attack on his own party&rsquo;s leadership structure, particularly Rahul Gandhi and the Congress high command.
The BJP was quick to seize the opportunity. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla called Tharoor&rsquo;s comments &ldquo;a direct attack&rdquo; on &ldquo;nepo kids&rdquo; like Rahul Gandhi and RJD&rsquo;s Tejashwi Yadav. &ldquo;Wonder what repercussions will follow against Dr Tharoor for speaking so candidly,&rdquo; Poonawalla posted on X, amplifying the Congress MP&rsquo;s words across social media.
Tharoor&rsquo;s essay, published on October 31, also cited other political dynasties across parties but notably avoided direct criticism of similar trends within the BJP. His reflections have reignited the long-standing debate on meritocracy versus inheritance in Indian politics and once again placed the outspoken lawmaker at odds with his party&rsquo;s leadership, just as the election season heats up.
