RSS Chief&rsquo;s 'Retire at 75' Remark Sparks Political Ripples Ahead of Modi&rsquo;s Milestone Birthday
A seemingly philosophical remark by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has taken on sharp political undertones, as opposition leaders interpret it as a veiled nudge directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who turns 75 in September this year.
Speaking at a book release in Nagpur, Bhagwat said, &ldquo;When you turn 75, it means you should stop now and make way for others.&rdquo; The statement, though delivered in the context of honouring late RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle, quickly resonated far beyond the walls of the event.
Bhagwat recounted a light-hearted observation once made by Pingle: being felicitated with a shawl after the age of 75, he said, was a polite signal that it was time to withdraw from active roles and allow others to take the reins. Bhagwat echoed this sentiment, highlighting that despite Pingle&rsquo;s lifelong dedication to national service, he believed in stepping aside gracefully when the time came.
However, with Prime Minister Modi approaching the same age mark in just two months, the remark has triggered a flurry of political speculation. Critics from across the opposition spectrum have seized upon the comment, drawing parallels to the BJP&rsquo;s own precedent of easing out senior leaders such as LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Jaswant Singh, all of whom were effectively sidelined after crossing 75.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut questioned whether the Prime Minister would now apply the same age threshold to himself, just as he had done with his predecessors. Similarly, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi criticised what he called &ldquo;selective application of principles&rdquo;, noting that the so-called Margdarshak Mandal had served as a form of polite retirement for veterans &mdash; a rule that now seems conveniently inapplicable to the top leadership.
Bhagwat&rsquo;s comment has placed the BJP in an uncomfortable spotlight at a time when succession, generational change, and internal hierarchy remain sensitive issues within the ruling party. While there has been no official response from the Prime Minister or the BJP, the RSS chief&rsquo;s words have added fresh fuel to a long-standing debate: should political leadership have an expiry date?
As India inches closer to a major electoral cycle, the timing and subtext of Bhagwat&rsquo;s message are unlikely to be ignored. Whether it was intended as a gentle reminder or a quiet provocation, it has certainly stirred a conversation the ruling establishment might find harder to contain.
