Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a series of posts on the social media platform X, criticized the Congress party for the state of Emergency imposed in 1975 by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He asserted that the mindset which led to the imposition of the Emergency is still prevalent in the same party. Modi added that the Congress has no right to profess love for the Constitution.
"Today is a day to pay homage to all those great men and women who resisted the Emergency. The #DarkDaysOfEmergency reminds us of how the Congress Party subverted basic freedoms and trampled over the Constitution of India, which every Indian respects greatly," said PM Modi in his posts on X.
"The mindset which led to the imposition of the Emergency is very much alive among the same party which imposed it. They hide their disdain for the Constitution through their tokenism, but the people of India have seen through their antics, which is why they have rejected them time and again," PM Modi stated. "Those who imposed the Emergency have no right to profess their love for our Constitution," he wrote, adding that "these are the same people who have imposed Article 356 on innumerable occasions, got a Bill to destroy press freedom, destroyed federalism, and violated every aspect of the Constitution."
The Prime Minister also criticized the then Congress government for "disregarding every democratic principle" to "cling on to power." He mentioned that anyone who disagreed with the Congress was tortured and harassed, and socially regressive policies were unleashed to target the weakest sections.
The Emergency was declared on the midnight of June 24-25, 1975, exactly 49 years ago. Various excesses were reported at the time, including political arrests, mass forced sterilization, and beautification drives. All key opposition leaders at the time, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, George Fernandes, and Jayaprakash Narayan, among others, were either jailed or detained.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced on Monday that it will launch a nationwide programme on June 25 to mark the beginning of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency proclamation in 1975. The initiative aims to "expose" what the party describes as the "Congress party&rsquo;s authoritarianism" and "disregard for the Constitution."
In a statement, Lok Sabha MP and head of the BJP&rsquo;s media cell, Anil Baluni, said that party president J.P. Nadda will address party workers at the BJP&rsquo;s national headquarters in New Delhi. The address will focus on the theme 'Dark Days of Democracy.'

"આજનો દિવસ એ તમામ મહાપુરુષો અને મહિલાઓને શ્રદ્ધાંજલિ આપવાનો છે જેમણે કટોકટીનો પ્રતિકાર કર્યો હતો. #DarkDaysOfEmergency એ આપણને યાદ અપાવે છે કે કેવી રીતે કોંગ્રેસ પાર્ટીએ મૂળભૂત સ્વતંત્રતાઓને બરબાદ કરી અને ભારતના બંધારણને કચડી નાખ્યું, જેનો દરેક ભારતીય ખૂબ જ આદર કરે છે," PMએ કહ્યું. મોદીએ X પર તેમની પોસ્ટમાં.

વડા પ્રધાને "સત્તાને વળગી રહેવા" માટે "દરેક લોકશાહી સિદ્ધાંતની અવગણના કરવા" માટે તત્કાલીન કોંગ્રેસ સરકારની પણ ટીકા કરી હતી. તેમણે ઉલ્લેખ કર્યો હતો કે કોંગ્રેસ સાથે અસંમત હોય તે કોઈપણને ત્રાસ આપવામાં આવે છે અને હેરાન કરવામાં આવે છે, અને સૌથી નબળા વર્ગોને નિશાન બનાવવા માટે સામાજિક રીતે પ્રતિગામી નીતિઓ ચલાવવામાં આવી હતી.
બરાબર 49 વર્ષ પહેલાં 24-25 જૂન, 1975ની મધ્યરાત્રિએ ઈમરજન્સી જાહેર કરવામાં આવી હતી. તે સમયે રાજકીય ધરપકડ, સામૂહિક બળજબરીથી નસબંધી અને બ્યુટિફિકેશન ડ્રાઇવ સહિત વિવિધ અતિરેકની જાણ કરવામાં આવી હતી. અટલ બિહારી વાજપેયી, લાલકૃષ્ણ અડવાણી, જ્યોર્જ ફર્નાન્ડિસ અને જયપ્રકાશ નારાયણ સહિત તે સમયે તમામ મુખ્ય વિપક્ષી નેતાઓને કાં તો જેલમાં ધકેલી દેવામાં આવ્યા હતા અથવા તો અટકાયતમાં રાખવામાં આવ્યા હતા.

प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म एक्स पर कई पोस्ट में 1975 में तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी द्वारा लगाए गए आपातकाल के लिए कांग्रेस पार्टी की आलोचना की। उन्होंने जोर देकर कहा कि जिस मानसिकता के कारण आपातकाल लगाया गया था, वह आज भी उसी पार्टी में व्याप्त है। मोदी ने कहा कि कांग्रेस को संविधान के प्रति प्रेम जताने का कोई अधिकार नहीं है।
प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने एक्स पर अपने पोस्ट में कहा, "आज उन सभी महान पुरुषों और महिलाओं को श्रद्धांजलि देने का दिन है, जिन्होंने आपातकाल का विरोध किया था। आपातकाल के काले दिन हमें याद दिलाते हैं कि कैसे कांग्रेस पार्टी ने बुनियादी स्वतंत्रताओं को नष्ट किया और भारत के संविधान को रौंद दिया, जिसका हर भारतीय बहुत सम्मान करता है।"
प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने कहा, "जिस मानसिकता के कारण आपातकाल लगाया गया, वह उसी पार्टी में बहुत ज़्यादा जीवित है जिसने इसे लगाया था। वे अपने दिखावे के ज़रिए संविधान के प्रति अपने तिरस्कार को छिपाते हैं, लेकिन भारत के लोगों ने उनकी हरकतों को समझ लिया है, यही वजह है कि उन्होंने उन्हें बार-बार नकार दिया है।" उन्होंने लिखा, "आपातकाल लगाने वालों को हमारे संविधान के प्रति अपने प्यार का इज़हार करने का कोई अधिकार नहीं है।" उन्होंने आगे कहा कि "ये वही लोग हैं जिन्होंने अनगिनत मौकों पर अनुच्छेद 356 लगाया, प्रेस की आज़ादी को खत्म करने के लिए एक विधेयक पारित किया, संघवाद को नष्ट किया और संविधान के हर पहलू का उल्लंघन किया।"
प्रधानमंत्री ने तत्कालीन कांग्रेस सरकार की भी आलोचना की और कहा कि उसने "सत्ता पर काबिज रहने के लिए हर लोकतांत्रिक सिद्धांत की अवहेलना की।" उन्होंने कहा कि कांग्रेस से असहमत होने वाले हर व्यक्ति को प्रताड़ित किया गया और परेशान किया गया तथा सबसे कमजोर वर्गों को निशाना बनाने के लिए सामाजिक रूप से प्रतिगामी नीतियां लागू की गईं।
आपातकाल की घोषणा 24-25 जून, 1975 की मध्य रात्रि को की गई थी, ठीक 49 साल पहले। उस समय राजनीतिक गिरफ़्तारियाँ, सामूहिक जबरन नसबंदी और सौंदर्यीकरण अभियान सहित कई तरह की ज्यादतियाँ सामने आईं। उस समय के सभी प्रमुख विपक्षी नेता, जिनमें अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी, लालकृष्ण आडवाणी, जॉर्ज फ़र्नांडिस और जयप्रकाश नारायण शामिल थे, या तो जेल में बंद थे या हिरासत में लिए गए थे।
भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा) ने सोमवार को घोषणा की कि वह 1975 में आपातकाल की घोषणा की 50वीं वर्षगांठ मनाने के लिए 25 जून को एक राष्ट्रव्यापी कार्यक्रम शुरू करेगी। इस पहल का उद्देश्य "कांग्रेस पार्टी की अधिनायकवादिता" और "संविधान के प्रति अनादर" को "उजागर" करना है।
