Charanjit Singh Channi, former Chief Minister of Punjab and Congress MP, was sworn in as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha today.

The elections for the Lok Sabha Speaker's post are being held for the first time since 1976.
&nbsp;According to the Lok Sabha secretariat, in 1952, the contest was between GV Mavalankar and Shankar Shantaram. Mavalankar secured victory with 394 votes against Shantaram's 55. Similarly, in 1976, Baliram Bhagat won the election with 344 votes, defeating Jagannath Rao who received 58 votes.
K Suresh, the INDIA bloc's nominee for Speaker of the Lok Sabha, emphasized the longstanding convention in Parliament where the Speaker is from the ruling party and the Deputy Speaker from the opposition. He pointed out that despite the recognition of his party as the opposition, they were denied the Deputy Speaker's post in the last two terms. Asserting their entitlement to the Deputy Speaker position, Suresh expressed disappointment over the government's failure to respond to their queries, prompting their decision to file their nomination for the Speaker's post.&nbsp;
Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed the Opposition's willingness to support the NDA's nominee for the position of Lok Sabha Speaker under the condition that the government adhered to convention by appointing a Deputy Speaker from their ranks. In response, the BJP criticized the Opposition's stance, emphasizing the non-partisan nature of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker roles. BJP MP Piyush Goyal stated, "The Speaker represents the entire House, not any specific party or opposition. Similarly, the Deputy Speaker is a representative of the entire House, and therefore, consensus among all members is essential. Imposing conditions for the Deputy Speaker's appointment based on party affiliations contradicts the established traditions of the Lok Sabha.
On the inaugural day of the 18th Lok Sabha session, MPs from the INDIA bloc gathered at the Parliament complex to demonstrate unity and resolve. Holding copies of the Constitution, they voiced fervent slogans advocating for the preservation of democracy.
&nbsp;Opposition leaders, such as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Rahul Gandhi, Sudip Bandyopadhyay from Trinamool Congress, and TR Baalu of DMK, along with others, convened near the former location of the Gandhi statue within the Parliament complex.
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi also joined the MPs.
