The Speaker for the 18th Lok Sabha will be chosen today. Senior BJP MP Om Birla, who served as the Speaker in the last Lok Sabha, is the NDA's nominee once again. After initially declining to sign K Suresh&rsquo;s nomination papers on Tuesday due to a lack of prior consultation, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has reportedly agreed to cooperate with the INDIA bloc candidate. K Suresh stated that following a meeting with TMC leaders Derek O&rsquo;Brien and Kalyan Banerjee, the party agreed to support his nomination. Additionally, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi had a 20-minute-long telephonic conversation with TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.
However, the TMC has not yet made an official statement regarding this development. Sources indicate that the TMC was concerned that a contest for the Speaker&rsquo;s post could highlight the Opposition&rsquo;s inadequate numbers and expose divisions within the INDIA alliance.
TMC leaders in West Bengal criticized the &ldquo;unilateral decision&rdquo; made by the Congress, stating that Mamata Banerjee was &ldquo;upset&rdquo; by the move. Sources close to the Chief Minister revealed that she was taken by &ldquo;surprise,&rdquo; expecting the Opposition parties to discuss &ldquo;suitable names&rdquo; before making any decisions.
The NDA and the Opposition failed to reach a consensus on the Speaker&rsquo;s nomination. On Monday night, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh engaged with Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other opposition leaders to seek agreement on Om Birla&rsquo;s nomination. 
Congress sources revealed that Kharge raised the issue of the Deputy Speaker during their discussion and was told it could be addressed on Tuesday morning. However, just before the noon deadline for Speaker nominations on Tuesday, the ruling party requested signatures on Birla&rsquo;s nomination papers without committing to the Deputy Speaker issue, leading to a breakdown in consensus.

कांग्रेस सूत्रों ने बताया कि खड़गे ने चर्चा के दौरान उपसभापति का मुद्दा उठाया और उन्हें बताया गया कि इस पर मंगलवार सुबह चर्चा की जा सकती है। हालांकि, मंगलवार को अध्यक्ष पद के लिए नामांकन की दोपहर की समयसीमा से ठीक पहले, सत्तारूढ़ दल ने उपसभापति के मुद्दे पर कोई प्रतिबद्धता जताए बिना बिड़ला के नामांकन पत्रों पर हस्ताक्षर मांगे, जिससे आम सहमति टूट गई।
