In an eventful day in both Houses, Congress MPs from the Opposition-led INDIA bloc moved adjournment motions over alleged paper leaks and irregularities in the NEET exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Though the 17th Lok Sabha (2019-2024) currently lacks a Deputy Speaker, sources indicate that the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is open to appointing one. While the NDA has not dismissed the Opposition's claim to the post, it criticized the Opposition's insistence that its nominee should fill the position. There is speculation that the role might go to an ally within the ruling alliance, though the Telugu Desam Party, BJP&rsquo;s largest ally, has expressed no interest in the role.
Amid slogans of "mantri hatao, mantri bhagao" (sack the minister, chase the minister) in the Rajya Sabha, former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, who is also the chief of Karnataka's JD(S), stated that while the inquiry is ongoing, no one should take responsibility for making decisions prematurely. He asserted that the government has fulfilled its duty so far.
"We can discuss who is responsible only after the inquiry report is submitted. I appeal for the proceedings to continue smoothly," he added.
When the Rajya Sabha reconvened at noon, former Prime Minister and JD(S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda stated that, without taking sides, he believed the government made the right decision by initiating a CBI inquiry into the NEET issue. "Lakhs have been affected by the NEET issue. The CBI has arrested people from different states.The government can't make a decision until the inquiry is concluded," he said, appealing to members to allow the proceedings in the Upper House to continue smoothly.
Opposition members shouted slogans of "Tanashahi Nahi Chalegi" (Won't allow dictatorship) and "Isteefa Do" (Give your resignation) as BJP member Sudhanshu Trivedi spoke on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address, amidst their demands for a discussion on the paper leaks.

I am hurt and surprised that Parliamentary tradition has fallen so much that the Leader of the Opposition will come to the Well, and the Deputy Leader will be in the Well.&rdquo;
