The debate over the Constitution took center stage on Monday as the Lok Sabha session began, with both the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc bringing it to the forefront of their parliamentary campaigns.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of consensus in running the country as he addressed the media ahead of the 18th Lok Sabha's first session. He stressed that while a majority is essential to govern, consensus is crucial for national progress. Modi expressed commitment to serving India by seeking everyone's cooperation, highlighting the diverse support needed from allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as BJP's parliamentary strength is below the majority mark.
WHAT MODI SAID
"This is a proud day for parliamentary democracy," Modi remarked, noting the historic nature of the oath-taking ceremony in the new parliament building. He acknowledged the rare opportunity his government has received to serve the nation for a third consecutive term, citing it as a testament to public endorsement of their policies and intentions.
In a veiled criticism of the opposition, Modi asserted that the country seeks substance over theatrics and slogans. He called for a responsible opposition that contributes constructively to parliamentary sessions, framing them as crucial opportunities to realize the aspirations of Indian citizens and advance the country towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
PM Modi marked June 25 as the anniversary of the Emergency, condemning it as a dark chapter in India's parliamentary history. During that period, Indira Gandhi, the then the Prime Minister and a prominent leader of the Congress party, imposed the Emergency in 1975, resulting in the suspension of civil liberties, the imprisonment of opposition figures and critics, and strict censorship of the press.
WHAT OPPOSITION SAID
Responding to Modi's statements, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the government's record over the past decade, likening it to an "undeclared emergency" that was ended by the people's mandate in the recent elections. Kharge emphasized the opposition's role in voicing concerns both within parliament and across the country, urging for consensus-building in national decision-making.
Kharge also questioned Modi's silence on various issues including recent train accidents, unrest in Manipur, floods in the Northeast, and allegations of irregularities in exit polls and the caste census.
The statements from both Modi and Kharge set the tone for the upcoming parliamentary session, highlighting the contentious issues and contrasting perspectives that will likely shape debates and legislative actions in the days ahead.

The Lok Sabha showcased its linguistic diversity as newly-elected MPs took their oaths in a variety of languages including English, Sanskrit, Hindi, Dogri, Bengali, Assamese, and Odia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other ministers took their oaths in Hindi amid slogans of "Jai Shri Ram" from the treasury benches in the Lok Sabha.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Urban Development Minister ML Khattar also opted for Hindi during their oath-taking.
&nbsp;Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan chose to take his oath in Odia, reflecting his constituency from Sambalpur, Odisha.
Suresh Gopi, the first BJP MP elected from Kerala, took his oath in Malayalam, invoking the gods with a mention of "Krishna, Guruvayurappa."
