Om Birla is set to return as the Lok Sabha Speaker, with the NDA expected to nominate him today. Addressing speculation on Opposition support, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi confirmed they would back the NDA&rsquo;s Speaker candidate. &ldquo;But the convention is that the post of Deputy Speaker is to be given to the Opposition,&rdquo; Rahul added. The post of Deputy Speaker, a Constitutional position, remained vacant in the 17th Lok Sabha.
The BJP-led NDA is set to announce its candidate for the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on Tuesday, initiating the nomination process for this key role. The BJP has begun discussions with its NDA allies about their nominee for the Speaker&rsquo;s post. Meanwhile, the opposition INDIA bloc is considering its options and may contest if their demand for a Deputy Speaker&rsquo;s post isn&rsquo;t met by the Narendra Modi government.
A total of 281 newly elected MPs, including leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Mahua Moitra, will take their oaths today. Yesterday&rsquo;s opening session of the Lok Sabha showcased linguistic diversity, with 262 members swearing in languages including English, Sanskrit, Hindi, Dogri, Bengali, Assamese, and Odia. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has confirmed that the Opposition parties would back the NDA&rsquo;s Speaker candidate.
&ldquo;But the convention is that the post of Deputy Speaker is to be given to the Opposition. Rajnath Singh ji had told Kharge ji that he would return his call regarding the same. But he hasn't. So on one hand Modi ji is talking about constructive cooperation and then they are insulting our leader. Their intention is not clear,&rdquo; Rahul said. According to Congress sources, as quoted by news agency ANI, Union Minister Rajnath Singh has reached out to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, urging for the unanimous election of the Lok Sabha Speaker to maintain the tradition of uncontested elections.
The name of the candidate has not been disclosed yet. Kharge will consult with other parties in the INDIA alliance once the candidate is revealed, with a strong likelihood of the Speaker being elected unopposed.
