Six people lost their lives and two others suffered serious injuries after a speeding truck collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in Bihar&rsquo;s Sheikhpura district on Tuesday. The deadly crash took place near Maninda village on the Sheikhpura&ndash;Sikandra Road, part of National Highway 33A.
According to Sheikhpura SP Baliram Kumar Choudhary, all five victims died on the spot. Their bodies were sent to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem, where procedures were underway. The impact was so severe that the auto-rickshaw was crushed beyond recognition, forcing rescue teams to deploy a JCB to pull out the trapped passengers.
Eyewitnesses said the auto was heading towards Sheikhpura city when a truck, allegedly driving at high speed and from the wrong direction, lost control and slammed into it. The force of the collision pushed the three-wheeler several feet off the road. A total of seven people were travelling in the auto.
Locals rushed to help and alerted authorities. Police teams from Barbigha and Sheikhpura reached the spot quickly, sealed the area, and began diverting traffic. The critically injured passengers were taken to Sadar Hospital and later referred to a higher medical facility in Pawapuri due to their worsening condition.
The fatal accident triggered anger among residents, who blamed poor road monitoring, overspeeding, wrong-lane driving, and overloaded vehicles for frequent mishaps on the highway. They demanded strict enforcement and tighter regulation of heavy vehicles on NH-33A.
Families of the deceased were devastated by the tragedy. Meanwhile, the administration has begun an investigation into whether speeding or negligence by the truck driver caused the accident. The district authorities are also examining compensation for the victims&rsquo; families. Further inquiry is ongoing.
