Pakistani authorities have begun the process of deporting Sarabjeet Kaur, a woman from Punjab who went to Pakistan on a religious pilgrimage in November and did not return. She is expected to be handed over to Indian authorities at the Attari-Wagah border on Monday evening.
Sarabjeet had travelled to Pakistan as part of a Sikh jatha to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev at Nankana Sahib. During the visit, she separated from the group and later surfaced in Pakistan&rsquo;s Sheikhupura district, where she reportedly converted to Islam and married a local man, Nasir Hussain.
According to officials, a joint team of Pakistan&rsquo;s intelligence agencies and local police traced and detained both Sarabjeet and Nasir. Following this, the Pakistani government initiated formal deportation proceedings, as Sarabjeet is an Indian national.
Reports indicate that shortly after arriving in Pakistan on November 4, Sarabjeet married Nasir Hussain and formally adopted Islam. She later changed her name to Noor Hussain. The development came to light after the couple allegedly went into hiding, prompting a police search.
Subsequently, the couple approached the Lahore High Court, claiming harassment by local authorities. The court directed the police not to interfere in their personal lives. In her petition, Sarabjeet stated that she had married a Pakistani citizen and had contacted the Indian mission regarding her status.
A short video of their marriage ceremony later surfaced on social media, in which Sarabjeet is heard stating that she converted to Islam and married of her own free will. Despite these claims, Pakistani authorities have decided to deport her, as she does not hold Pakistani citizenship.
The case has drawn attention in both countries due to its religious, legal and cross-border implications.
