The Madras High Court has dismissed multiple petitions seeking a CBI or court-monitored probe into the Karur stampede that killed at least 39 people during a Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) rally last week.
The Madurai bench, comprising Justices M Dhandapani and M Jothiraman, stated that the investigation is already underway by a state-appointed commission and is still in its early stages. The court also turned down a plea seeking restrictions on future political rallies by TVK leader and actor-turned-politician Vijay.
Additionally, the bench disposed of a PIL demanding standard operating procedures (SOPs) for such events, noting that the principal bench has already directed the state government to frame them. Until these SOPs are finalised, the state has assured that no political rallies will be allowed in non-designated spaces.
The bench further issued a notice to the state government on a plea demanding higher compensation for the victims and asked it to file a detailed response.
The Karur tragedy, which occurred on September 27, saw massive crowds at the TVK rally, leading to a deadly stampede that claimed the lives of 40 people, including women and children.
