Prominent Indian wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat played a pivotal role in the January 2023 demonstrations against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) head Brij Bhushan Singh. Concerns about problems with the wrestling administration and governance were the main causes of their demonstrations.
During these demonstrations, Sakshi Malik who is still the only female wrestler from India to have won an Olympic medal was quite outspoken. The wrestling community was greatly touched by the protests' controversy and commotion. Sakshi Malik declared her retirement from competitive wrestling last year, not long after Sanjay Singh succeeded Brij Bhushan Singh as WFI chief.
