The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has formally chargesheeted former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik, along with five other individuals, in connection with alleged irregularities surrounding the Rs 2,200 crore Kiru hydropower project. The agency submitted its findings to a special court after conducting a probe that spanned three years.
Among those named in the chargesheet is the director of the private company that secured the 2019 civil works contract for the Kiru Hydro Electric Power (HEP) Project. The case involves suspected corruption in the awarding of the project&rsquo;s civil works, which were estimated at Rs 2,200 crore.
Malik, who held the gubernatorial post in Jammu and Kashmir from August 23, 2018 to October 30, 2019, had previously alleged that he was approached with a Rs 300-crore bribe offer to approve two files, one of which related to the Kiru project.&nbsp;
In April 2022, the CBI registered two First Information Reports (FIRs) based on Malik&rsquo;s corruption claims&mdash;one concerning the hydropower project and another regarding a group medical insurance scheme for government employees.
Following the FIRs, the CBI conducted searches at Malik&rsquo;s residence and several other locations in February last year. Malik had responded to the development by denying any involvement in corrupt activities.&nbsp;
He stated that the CBI targeted his home instead of investigating the individuals he had identified in his complaint, whom he accused of engaging in corrupt practices.
After being named in the chargesheet, Malik issued a statement via social media platform X, informing the public of his current health condition. &ldquo;I am getting calls from many of my well-wishers, which I am unable to pick up. My condition is very bad right now. I am currently admitted to the hospital and am not in a condition to talk to anyone. #satyapalmalik,&rdquo; he wrote.
