The government is looking into allegations that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi holds dual citizenship, the Allahabad High Court heard on November 26. The court is hearing a case stemming from a plea filed by advocate and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vignesh Shishir, who claims that Gandhi holds British citizenship. 
A bench comprising Justices Attau Rahman Masoodi and Subhash Vidyarthi have asked the Centre to provide updates on its stance on the allegations. The case will next be heard December 19.
Shishir has also sought an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the issue. His petition claims that one VSS Sarma had sought information on Gandhi&rsquo;s citizenship in 2022 from the UK government, which reportedly confirmed &ldquo;some details&rdquo;. 
Notably, the BJP leader acknowledges that the UK declined to disclose complete information, citing data protection laws and the absence of a signed letter of authority from Gandhi.
However, he claims that the emails and supporting materials indicate that Gandhi holds British citizenship, which would&nbsp;disqualify him from holding Indian citizenship under Article 9 of the Indian Constitution. 
Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey told the court on November 25 that the Union Home Ministry had received the petitioner&rsquo;s representation and was processing it. 
Meanwhile, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a similar petition in the Delhi High Court, which has indicated that it will hear the case after the Allahabad High Court proceedings conclude.
