The escalating conflict in Gaza has triggered a sharp political storm in India, with the Congress party strongly criticising the Centre for what it calls a &ldquo;complete silence&rdquo; on Israel&rsquo;s latest military operations.
Israel has launched a full-scale offensive to capture Gaza City and also announced plans to expand settlements in the occupied West Bank. Condemning these moves, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on X, &ldquo;Israel has begun its military operations to take over Gaza City. Plans for expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank have also been announced. The Indian National Congress condemns both these moves. It also very strongly deplores the Modi Govt&rsquo;s complete silence on Israel&rsquo;s unacceptable actions.&rdquo;
Congress reiterated its long-standing position of support for a sovereign, independent and viable Palestine, living in peace alongside Israel. Several other opposition parties, including the CPI(M), CPI and Samajwadi Party, have also demanded that India take a clear stand and speak against Israel&rsquo;s military escalation.
In recent weeks, Israel has been widely criticised by the international community for what many see as a brutal war against Palestinians, with reports claiming more than 60,000 lives lost so far. Countries such as the UK, France, Australia and Canada have raised concerns, and some have even declared recognition of Palestine as a state.
Since Hamas&rsquo;s October 7, 2023, attack that killed hundreds of Israelis and led to nearly 250 hostages being taken, Israel has intensified its strikes. Despite reports of a ceasefire, the violence continues unabated, leaving the two-state solution increasingly uncertain.
