The Assam Cabinet on Sunday approved a Bill seeking to ban polygamy in the state, with provisions for up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for those found guilty. 
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the proposed legislation, titled The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, will be tabled in the State Assembly on November 25.
Addressing a press conference following the Cabinet meeting, Mr. Sarma said, &ldquo;The Assam Cabinet today approved a Bill to ban polygamy.&nbsp;The Bill will be called "The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025". It will be tabled in the Assembly on November 25.&rdquo;
He added that while the Bill will apply across Assam, certain exceptions may be made for areas governed under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
The Chief Minister stated that those convicted of polygamy could face rigorous imprisonment of up to seven years. 
&ldquo;We have also decided to create a fund to give compensation to the victim women. The government will help with financial support in the required cases so that no woman faces hardship in her life,&rdquo; Mr. Sarma said.
He noted that the proposed compensation fund is aimed at supporting women affected by polygamous marriages, ensuring they do not suffer financially after the enforcement of the new law.
The move is part of the state government&rsquo;s broader initiative to promote women&rsquo;s rights and strengthen social justice mechanisms in Assam.
