The Indian stock market closed on a positive note on Wednesday, buoyed by lower inflation data and strong buying in select sectors. The Sensex jumped 304 points, or 0.38%, to settle at 80,539.91, while the Nifty rose 131.95 points, or 0.54%, to end at 24,619.35.
July&rsquo;s retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), eased to 1.55% its lowest since June 2017, driven by a fall in food prices. This sharp drop in inflation lifted investor sentiment, especially in midcap, auto, and metal stocks.
The 30-share Sensex opened higher at 80,492.17, sustaining gains throughout the session. Autos and metals led the rally, while ITC, Ultratech Cement, and Titan ended in the red. Major gainers included BEL, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Kotak Bank, Power Grid, Tata Motors, Bajaj Finance, Sun Pharma, Asian Paints, and Trent.
Sector-wise, Nifty Auto surged 1.12%, Nifty Fin Services added 0.39%, and Nifty Bank climbed 0.25%. IT and FMCG indices remained flat. In the broader market, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Small Cap 100 outperformed, up 0.63% and 0.66%, respectively.
The rupee strengthened to 87.51 against the US dollar, supported by positive global cues, easing oil prices, and anticipation of developments from the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting on August 15.
Analysts believe the sharp fall in inflation may support discretionary spending in the coming months, keeping India&rsquo;s growth outlook resilient despite global uncertainties.
