Indian stock markets closed slightly lower on Wednesday after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to maintain the repo rate at 5.5%, in line with market expectations.
The Sensex ended 166.26 points down at 80,543.99, while the Nifty slipped 75.35 points to close at 24,574.20. The rate pause and ongoing global trade concerns triggered volatility, with IT stocks leading the decline.
Major IT players like Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Tech were among the top losers, reflecting investor anxiety over global tariff tensions. The Nifty IT index fell 1.74%.
Sector-wise, Bank Nifty ended flat at 55,411.15, while FMCG and Auto also posted losses. Broader markets followed suit, with Nifty Small Cap 100 and Midcap 100 down over 1%.
Despite short-term jitters, analysts remain optimistic. &ldquo;India&rsquo;s growth prospects remain strong, backed by private investment, improved consumption, and continued government capex,&rdquo; said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.
The RBI&rsquo;s neutral stance and stable policy approach suggest a focus on inflation control while supporting long-term economic growth.
