Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Wednesday, buoyed by hopes of a US Federal Reserve rate cut following the latest US inflation data.
The BSE Sensex climbed 179 points (0.22%) to 80,414, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 70 points (0.29%) to 24,557. Broader markets outperformed, with the BSE SmallCap gaining 0.65% and the BSE MidCap adding 0.64%.
Sector-wise, Nifty Metal surged 1.57% and Nifty Realty rose 0.76%, while most other indices posted modest moves between -0.40% and +0.40%. In the Nifty pack, Apollo Hospitals jumped nearly 5%, followed by Hindalco and Tata Motors. Maruti Suzuki fell 0.51%, while Tech Mahindra and Axis Bank saw slight declines.
Analysts note that strained US-India trade ties and weaker earnings projections for FY26 have weighed on market sentiment, encouraging short positions. Key support levels for Nifty are seen at 24,400 and 24,300, with resistance near 24,600.
Global cues were positive, with Asia-Pacific markets rallying. Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei hit a record high with a 2.46% surge, Hong Kong&rsquo;s Hang Seng climbed 1.81%, and South Korea&rsquo;s Kospi rose 0.63%.
On Tuesday, FIIs sold equities worth ₹3,399 crore, while DIIs bought ₹3,508 crore.
