Indian stock markets ended flat on Thursday as early gains were wiped out by profit booking in IT and auto stocks, with investors staying cautious ahead of the Bihar election results.
The Sensex closed at 84,478.67, up just 12 points or 0.01%, while the Nifty settled at 25,879.15, rising by 3 points or 0.01%. Despite a strong opening, volatility persisted through the session as traders locked in profits after a three-day rally.
Among Sensex gainers were ICICI Bank, PowerGrid, L&amp;T, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharma, and Maruti Suzuki. On the downside, Tata Motors, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, TCS, Infosys, HUL, and Bajaj Finserv saw declines.
Sector-wise, Nifty Fin Services and Nifty Bank rose 0.22% and 0.18% respectively, while Nifty Auto, IT, and FMCG indices slipped amid mixed investor sentiment. Broader markets also weakened, with Nifty Small Cap 100 down 0.37% and Nifty Midcap 100 falling 0.35%.
The rupee remained flat at around ₹88.67 against the dollar, with traders awaiting US inflation data and the Bihar election outcome on Friday.
Experts believe low inflation data strengthens hopes of an RBI rate cut, which could benefit sectors like metals and realty.
