The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed that charges be framed within three weeks in the high-profile Iskcon Bridge accident case in Ahmedabad, where nine people lost their lives in July 2023.
The ruling removes nearly three years of delays in the trial of accused Tathya Patel, whose repeated applications in multiple courts had &ldquo;misused the judicial process&rdquo; and slowed proceedings. The bench observed that the trial must now move forward &ldquo;without further hindrance.&rdquo;
To strengthen the prosecution, the Gujarat government appointed senior advocate P. M. Trivedi as the special public prosecutor. Investigators reviewed statements from 191 witnesses and examined extensive evidence, including CCTV footage, forensic findings and digital data from the luxury vehicle involved.
The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of July 20, 2023, when a speeding luxury car, allegedly driven by Patel, ploughed into a crowd that had gathered after a minor accident on the Iskcon Bridge. The impact killed nine people on the spot and left several others injured, triggering statewide outrage.
A chargesheet was filed within a week, invoking culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, causing grievous hurt and violations under the Motor Vehicles Act. A senior officer said, &ldquo;The probe was carried out with complete transparency. Every technical aspect and witness statement was verified to ensure an airtight case.&rdquo;
Officials confirmed that forensic reports found the vehicle travelling at excessively high speed moments before the crash, leading to the deadly impact.
