The United States and Pakistan have held their annual counterterrorism dialogue in Islamabad, reaffirming a joint commitment to combat terrorism &ldquo;in all its forms and manifestations.&rdquo; The meeting was co-chaired by US State Department Counterterrorism Coordinator Gregory LoGerfo and Pakistan&rsquo;s UN Special Secretary Nabeel Munir.
The discussions highlighted threats from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), ISIS-Khorasan, and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). However, the joint statement avoided mentioning other Pakistan-based groups on the US Foreign Terrorist Organisation list, including Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen, and others.
The talks came a day after Washington added the BLA and its affiliate, the Mujaheed Brigade, to its terror list, imposing sanctions on the groups and their leaders.
Both sides stressed the need for sustained engagement, institutional capacity building, and cooperation against the misuse of emerging technologies for terror purposes. They also discussed collaboration in international bodies, including the UN Security Council, where Pakistan currently holds a seat.
The US expressed condolences over recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan, including the Jaffar Express hijacking and the Khuzdar school bus bombing. The BLA claimed responsibility for the former, which killed 31 people, while the latter took 10 civilian lives, including eight students.
The dialogue has been held annually since 2023, aiming to enhance regional security despite long-standing concerns about Pakistan&rsquo;s record in hosting extremist groups.
