A bipartisan group of US lawmakers has introduced a resolution underscoring the strategic importance of the India-US partnership, highlighting its role in advancing regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, and shared democratic values.
The measure, brought forward by Representatives Ami Bera and Joe Wilson, has garnered support from 24 original cosponsors, including Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Rich McCormick, Deborah Ross, Rob Wittman, Suhas Subramanyam and Jay Obernolte.
A key focus of the resolution is the deepening security collaboration between the two nations. 
It calls for &ldquo;continued cooperation on counterterrorism, including the swift prosecution of the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.&rdquo;
It also references the April attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, stating it was &ldquo;claimed by The Resistance Front (a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba), highlighting the persistent threat of cross-border and proxy terrorism in South Asia.&rdquo;
The lawmakers stressed that support for strong ties with India has remained steady across US administrations. 
&ldquo;For more than three decades, it has been the policy of the United States under administrations of Presidents Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden to strengthen the strategic partnership with India, recognising its importance to regional stability, democratic governance, economic growth, and shared regional priorities,&rdquo; the resolution noted.
The measure also emphasises India&rsquo;s central role in the Indo-Pacific and reaffirms support for cooperation through the Quad grouping of India, the US, Japan and Australia. 
It &ldquo;encourages the United States and India to continue and expand cooperation for a free, open, and resilient Indo-Pacific, including through the Quad.&rdquo;
In addition, the resolution highlights the need for continued collaboration in technology, energy security, economic initiatives and people-to-people exchanges.
The move comes shortly after five US lawmakers urged President Donald Trump to reconsider his September 19 proclamation on H-1B visas, warning of its &ldquo;potentially negative impacts&rdquo; on the bilateral relationship. 
Their letter argued that &ldquo;although 75% of current H-1B visa recipients come from India, the program still needs to be enhanced and increased rather than limited to a select amount of people or corporations that can pay exorbitant amounts of money to get a visa.&rdquo;
The letter was signed by Jimmy Panetta, Ami Bera, Salud Carbajal, Derek Tran and Julie Johnson.
