South Africa has taken the global stage with an unexpected act of compassion, after more than 150 Palestinian refugees arrived at Johannesburg&rsquo;s O.R. Tambo International Airport without proper documentation. The group, who had journeyed from Gaza via Nairobi, found themselves in limbo&mdash;until Pretoria stepped in.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that despite the lack of formal exit stamps or papers, the Palestinians were granted temporary entry on humanitarian grounds.
&ldquo;They arrived without proper documentation, but as a nation rooted in justice, we opened our doors,&rdquo; Ramaphosa said, emphasizing South Africa&rsquo;s firm backing of the Palestinian cause. &ldquo;Their case is being processed thoroughly with support from intelligence, Home Affairs, and international affairs agencies.&rdquo;
The refugees&rsquo; arrival reportedly took even authorities by surprise. Humanitarian organization Gift of the Givers played a central role in supporting the group on arrival, ensuring they received food, medical checks, and legal guidance.
Of the over 150 who landed, 23 have since departed for onward destinations. The rest remain in South Africa under temporary arrangements as their status continues to be reviewed. While authorities are treating this as an exceptional step, it has reignited discussion on the country&rsquo;s longstanding solidarity with Palestine.
Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa&rsquo;s moral stance: &ldquo;We have always stood with the people of Palestine. This was no different.&rdquo;
The move, amid the intensifying conflict in Gaza, reflects an assertive humanitarian posture from Pretoria, one that stands out as many nations tighten borders to asylum seekers.
