Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated further on Monday as former Pakistani foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto and Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir issued fresh threats over the Indus Waters Treaty.
Bhutto, speaking at a Sindh government event, accused India of &ldquo;water aggression&rdquo; and warned of war if New Delhi proceeded with changes to the 1960 treaty. Calling the Indus River &ldquo;Pakistan&rsquo;s heritage,&rdquo; he claimed that any attack on it would be a strike on the country&rsquo;s history and culture. His remarks come after India suspended the treaty following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.
A day earlier, Munir, during an address to the Pakistani diaspora in Tampa, Florida, reportedly threatened the use of nuclear weapons against India in the event of an existential crisis, claiming Islamabad could &ldquo;take half the world down&rdquo; if pushed into war. He also warned of destroying any Indian-built dams on the Indus with missiles. This marked his second visit to the US in two months.
India&rsquo;s Ministry of External Affairs hit back, calling the comments &ldquo;nuclear sabre-rattling&rdquo; and questioning Pakistan&rsquo;s nuclear command and control. New Delhi said such threats only reinforce global doubts about Islamabad&rsquo;s credibility, especially given its military&rsquo;s ties to terrorist groups. The statement also criticised the choice of making such remarks from the soil of a &ldquo;friendly third country.&rdquo;
India reiterated that it would not bow to nuclear blackmail and would take all measures necessary to safeguard its national security.
