A man was killed in a crude bomb blast in Bangladesh&rsquo;s capital Dhaka on Wednesday evening, as the country continues to witness heightened political tensions following the killing of a prominent student leader last week.
According to local media reports, miscreants hurled a crude bomb from a flyover in the Moghbazar area around 7 pm. The explosion occurred in front of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, the central office of 1971 Liberation War veterans.
The victim, identified as Siam and believed to be in his early 20s, died on the spot. Police said he was a private shop employee who was drinking tea at a roadside stall beneath the flyover when the blast occurred.
The incident comes ahead of the return of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is set to arrive in the country on Thursday after nearly 17 years in exile in London. Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is seen as a key political figure ahead of the general elections scheduled for February.
Authorities have ordered heightened security measures in Dhaka, anticipating large gatherings as the BNP prepares to welcome Rahman. His return coincides with ongoing protests over the killing of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot by masked attackers earlier this month and later died during treatment in Singapore.
Officials said investigations into the bomb blast are underway, while security agencies remain on alert amid fears of further violence.
