More than three decades after establishing diplomatic ties with Israel, Kazakhstan has announced that it will formally join the Abraham Accords, a move officials describe as an extension of the country&rsquo;s long-standing foreign policy anchored in regional stability and pragmatic engagement.
The declaration came on Thursday, just hours before a scheduled meeting between US President Donald Trump and Central Asian leaders in Washington. In a statement, Kazakhstan said, &ldquo;Our anticipated accession to the Abraham Accords represents a natural and logical continuation of Kazakhstan&rsquo;s foreign policy course grounded in dialogue, mutual respect, and regional stability.&rdquo;
The announcement followed an early hint from US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, who said Washington would soon reveal a new country joining the normalisation framework but stopped short of naming it. &ldquo;Abraham Accords are big,&nbsp; we&rsquo;re going to announce another country coming into the Abraham Accords,&rdquo; he said.
Kazakhstan and Israel already enjoy full diplomatic relations established in 1992, with cooperation spanning technology, agriculture, defence, and energy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last visited Astana in 2016. How formal accession to the accords will reshape this relationship remains to be seen.
The timing of Kazakhstan&rsquo;s move is politically significant. Trump has been positioning himself as a Middle East &ldquo;peacemaker&rdquo; after brokering a fragile Gaza ceasefire, even as Israeli strikes intensify across Palestinian territories and Lebanon. Simultaneously, Kazakhstan appears eager to bolster ties with Washington, with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visiting the US and signing a critical minerals cooperation deal on Thursday.
Trump, during his first term, brokered the Abraham Accords between Israel and the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco deals that upended the long-held Arab Peace Initiative, which required the creation of a viable Palestinian state before diplomatic recognition. Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the &ldquo;land for peace&rdquo; formula, pursuing agreements that bypass Palestinian negotiations entirely.
Despite widespread criticism that the accords have done little to address the core Israeli-Palestinian conflict, especially during the devastating two-year Gaza war participating nations have maintained their economic and security partnerships with Israel. Trump has recently said he hopes Saudi Arabia will join next, though Riyadh continues to insist on conditions outlined in the Arab Peace Initiative.
Kazakhstan&rsquo;s entry marks a significant geopolitical shift in Central Asia and yet another step toward expanding a framework that continues to reshape alliances in the Middle East.
