Iran&rsquo;s permanent mission to the UN in New York has strongly denied allegations that the nation had breached the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), according to the official news agency IRNA.
The Institute for the Study of War, a US national security policy research organization, claimed that Iran had been exploring methods to produce and deploy pharmaceutical-based chemical agents for military purposes. This claim was based on a November 26 report by the US Institute for Science and International Security, Xinhua news agency reported.
The CWC strictly forbids the development, production, and stockpiling of chemical weapons.
The Iranian diplomatic mission took to social media to respond to the claims. On November 28, it posted on X that Iran stands as a responsible signatory to the CWC, asserting that &ldquo;over the past several decades, not a single instance of Iranian violation has been recorded&rdquo;.
It called the allegation &ldquo;unfounded&rdquo; and &ldquo;merely an outgrowth of psychological warfare propagated by the Zionist regime (Israel) in the wake of its recent defeat on the Lebanese front.&rdquo;
The multi-lateral convention has been ratified by 193 states-parties. Israel has signed the convention but not ratified it. Egypt, North Korea, and South Sudan have neither signed nor ratified.
