Morocco has launched a nationwide emergency relief operation after deadly winter storms triggered floods, snow and freezing temperatures across large parts of the country. Authorities said aid will reach nearly 73,000 households across 28 provinces, as communities struggle with loss of life, damaged homes and disrupted services.
The relief drive follows a catastrophic flash flood in the coastal city of Safi, where at least 37 people were killed after intense rainfall overwhelmed the city within an hour. Muddy torrents swept vehicles off roads, flooded homes and shops, and trapped residents indoors. &ldquo;A lady is said to lose everything and the other could escape only with her clothes on.&nbsp;
Officials said around 70 homes and commercial properties were damaged, and 14 people required hospital treatment, with two in intensive care. Schools in Safi have been shut for several days as debris continues to block roads. Water levels reportedly rose to nearly four metres in some neighbourhoods, particularly in the Bab Chabaa district.
As food, blankets and emergency supplies are distributed, prosecutors have launched an investigation into whether infrastructure failures worsened the disaster. Weather authorities have issued red alerts for heavy snowfall in the High Atlas and orange alerts for rain in central and northern regions, warning that extreme conditions may persist amid growing climate volatility.
