Cyclone Senyar, which formed over the Strait of Malacca and neighbouring northeast Indonesia, crossed the Indonesian coast on Wednesday morning with sustained wind speeds of 70&ndash;80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system was centred close to coastal Indonesia, lying around 80 km east of Kuta Makmur and nearly 580 km southeast of Nancowry in the Nicobar Islands.
IMD said the storm is likely to continue moving west-southwestward, maintaining cyclonic intensity until Thursday morning. After that, it is expected to recurve eastwards and gradually weaken over the subsequent 24 hours. In the same region, a well-marked low-pressure area persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Southeast Sri Lanka&ndash;Equatorial Indian Ocean, which is expected to intensify into a depression within 24 hours and move towards the North Tamil Nadu&ndash;Puducherry coasts over the next two days.
Under the influence of these evolving systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely across the Nicobar and Andaman Islands, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, the IMD warned. The low-pressure system is expected to strengthen further as it tracks north-northwest across the Bay, raising concern for coastal and island districts.
Gale-force winds reaching 70&ndash;80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph, are forecast over the Strait of Malacca, South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Wind speeds are expected to reduce to 50&ndash;60 kmph by Thursday morning, further dropping to 40&ndash;50 kmph on Friday, with gradual weakening thereafter. Fishermen have been strictly advised to avoid the region until conditions improve.
