Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of Bangladesh&rsquo;s 2024 student uprising, died on Thursday after succumbing to injuries sustained in an assassination attempt, according to an official statement issued by Singapore&rsquo;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hadi was airlifted from Bangladesh to Singapore on December 15 and admitted to the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at Singapore General Hospital for emergency medical treatment. He had been shot in the head days earlier in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, and remained in critical condition throughout his treatment.
Singaporean authorities confirmed that despite extensive efforts by medical teams from Singapore General Hospital and the National Neuroscience Institute, Hadi passed away on December 18, 2025. Singapore is currently coordinating with the Bangladesh High Commission to facilitate the repatriation of his body to Dhaka.
The assassination attempt occurred on December 12 in Dhaka&rsquo;s Paltan area when unidentified assailants opened fire on Hadi while he was travelling in a battery-powered auto-rickshaw along Culvert Road. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital and later flown abroad for advanced care.
Hadi was a key figure in Inqilab Mancha, an anti-Hasina political platform that emerged during the July 2024 student uprising, which ultimately led to the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. At the time of the attack, he was campaigning as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency for the upcoming February elections.
Although Inqilab Mancha played a central role in the uprising, the interim government later disbanded the group and barred it from contesting national elections, citing security concerns.
Following Hadi&rsquo;s death, interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced a formal probe into the attack and declared a one-day state mourning. He urged citizens to exercise restraint as authorities intensified efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.
