The United Kingdom moved closer to legalizing assisted dying as lawmakers voted in favour of the controversial Assisted Dying Bill during its second reading on Friday. Despite this milestone, the bill, introduced by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, must navigate significant legislative hurdles before becoming law, potentially taking another two to three years.
The proposed law would grant terminally ill adults with less than six months to live the right to end their own lives, provided strict conditions are met. Patients must demonstrate full decision-making capacity and be able to self-administer the process. Each case would require approval from two independent doctors and the High Court.
After an emotional debate, 275 MPs supported the bill, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer. However, opposition came from a range of MPs, including members of the Conservative Party and the left wing of Labour. The bill will now proceed to detailed scrutiny and further debates in Parliament.
Interestingly, former Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Theresa May remain staunch opponents, pledging to vote against the measure if given the chance. Conversely, David Cameron, who previously opposed assisted dying, has publicly reversed his stance, penning an article supporting the bill.
As the proposal advances, it continues to spark polarised opinions across political and societal lines, with questions of ethics, healthcare, and human rights dominating discussions.
