In a rare geological event, the Krasheninnikov volcano in Russia&rsquo;s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted for the first time in over 600 years, sending an enormous ash plume up to 6 kilometers into the sky. The eruption began early Sunday at 2:50 a.m. local time, according to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT).
Initially, ash emissions were reported to rise 3 to 4 kilometers, but quickly intensified, prompting authorities to issue an orange aviation warning, a sign of significant volcanic activity affecting air travel.
Olga Girina, head of KVERT, confirmed that this was the first recorded eruption of Krasheninnikov in six centuries. The ash plume is currently moving southeast toward the Pacific Ocean, with no inhabited areas in its immediate path.
"The plume is spreading eastward from the volcano toward the Pacific Ocean," stated Kamchatka&rsquo;s Ministry of Emergency Situations. "No ashfall has been reported in populated regions."
Located roughly 200 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and near Lake Kronotskoye, Krasheninnikov is part of Kamchatka&rsquo;s Eastern Volcanic Zone, a region globally recognized for its high volcanic density.
This eruption comes just days after a powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake jolted the Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings and temporary emergency declarations in some districts.
Authorities had recently cautioned the public about potential ash clouds from several volcanoes, warning they could reach altitudes between 6 and 10 kilometers. Following the current eruption, both residents and tourists have been strongly advised to remain at least 10 kilometers away from volcanic summits in the area.
