Diplomatic hopes between Pakistan and Afghanistan have collapsed once again, as border tensions and mistrust overshadow the Istanbul peace talks. On Friday, Pakistan&rsquo;s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that negotiations had hit a &ldquo;complete deadlock,&rdquo; a claim Kabul has not yet confirmed.
The breakdown became more dramatic when Pakistan&rsquo;s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif publicly declared that &ldquo;as we speak, the talks are over.&rdquo; Issuing a sharp warning to Kabul, Asif added that the current ceasefire would last &ldquo;only until there is no breach from the Afghan side.&rdquo;
The deadlock comes barely a week after Turkey announced that both countries had agreed to maintain the ceasefire. The Istanbul statement had read: &ldquo;All parties have agreed on continuation of ceasefire&hellip; and will put in place a monitoring and verification mechanism to impose penalty on the violating party.&rdquo;
But Pakistan is now accusing the Taliban of failing to uphold the commitments it made under the 2021 Doha Accord, particularly on preventing cross-border terrorism. Minister Tarar said Pakistan values stability but will take all &ldquo;necessary measures&rdquo; to protect its citizens. He added that Pakistan &ldquo;will not support any steps by the Taliban government that are not in the interest of the Afghan people or neighboring countries.&rdquo;
The latest confrontation follows a month of escalating border violence. Tensions escalated after explosions in Kabul, which the Taliban blamed on Pakistan. Retaliatory attacks by Afghan fighters targeted Pakistani military posts, with the Taliban claiming it killed 58 soldiers, while Islamabad confirmed 23 casualties.
The ceasefire that followed proved fragile. Airstrikes were later reported inside Afghan territory, killing at least 10 people. On Thursday night, both sides briefly exchanged fire again at the Chaman border, underscoring how thin the peace truly is.
With both governments trading accusations and talks collapsing once more, the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier appears headed toward deeper instability rather than reconciliation.
