India has marked a first in its trade diplomacy with the conclusion of the India&ndash;New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, negotiated predominantly by an all-women team. The agreement is being seen as both a symbolic and substantive milestone, highlighting the growing leadership role of women in shaping India&rsquo;s global economic engagement.
The pact goes beyond tariff reductions, aiming to strengthen economic growth, expand market access, and create opportunities for small businesses, farmers, women entrepreneurs, students and young professionals. It is expected to support job creation, boost exports, and integrate Indian enterprises more deeply into global value chains.
Negotiations for the agreement began in March 2025 and were completed in a record nine months, reflecting strong political momentum on both sides. The FTA is designed to deepen bilateral economic ties, enhance cooperation across sectors such as education, innovation, defence and sports, and encourage smoother movement of professionals and talent.
With the agreement in place, India and New Zealand expect bilateral trade to double over the next five years, alongside significant long-term investment flows into India. The deal is also positioned as a strategic foundation for expanding people-to-people ties and strengthening the broader partnership between the two countries.
