Though Pakistan&rsquo;s role is firmly established, officials now admit that &ldquo;some crucial threads were never pulled,&rdquo; leaving lingering questions about how ten Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists navigated Mumbai with such ease.
Among the most debated gaps is the claim that a burqa-clad woman helped guide the attackers to the Lady Cama Hospital on the night of the assault. Officers told the Ram Pradhan Committee that this woman may have sheltered the gunmen days before the strike, possibly linked to a diesel-smuggling network connected to the Dawood syndicate. But since the committee&rsquo;s mandate did not cover operational leads, the claim was never investigated. &ldquo;All these factors were not considered during the probe,&rdquo; an officer said, adding that the incident &ldquo;was never taken up despite being flagged to the Centre.&rdquo;
The case also raises questions about David Headley&rsquo;s reconnaissance. Investigators now acknowledge that Headley mapped parts of the Taj Hotel with a level of detail that outstripped official blueprints. Security teams were unaware of a hidden stairway repeatedly used by the terrorists, a lapse that delayed response time and cost many lives. Another unanswered thread is the mysterious Basheer, the man Headley admitted met him at the airport during each Mumbai visit. &ldquo;Despite his confession, not much is known about him,&rdquo; an official said. &ldquo;This angle was never investigated.&rdquo;
With Tahawwur Rana now in NIA custody, agencies are preparing to revisit leads long left dormant. Officials say fresh scrutiny is essential not just to trace Pakistan&rsquo;s hand but to uncover any Indian links that enabled the conspiracy. &ldquo;Many who may have been part of this attack are still walking free,&rdquo; an investigator said. &ldquo;Only a complete probe, without leaving out any aspect can bring real closure to 26/11.&rdquo;
