The Lok Sabha witnessed noisy scenes on Wednesday as Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. The proposed law seeks to establish a national framework to regulate India&rsquo;s booming online gaming sector, spanning e-sports, educational platforms, and social gaming.
However, uproar from Opposition benches forced the House to adjourn minutes after the Bill&rsquo;s introduction. Proceedings resumed at 2 p.m., with Speaker pro tem PC Mohan overseeing the laying of papers and ministerial statements.
The Bill proposes a dedicated authority to steer strategic growth, ensure policy coordination, and enforce compliance. It also seeks a blanket ban on cross-border or foreign-operated money games, citing risks of addiction, fraud, data breaches, and threats to financial security and national sovereignty.
Emphasising youth protection, the legislation underscores safeguarding vulnerable populations and preserving public order.
Reacting to the disruptions, Union Minister Kiran Rijiju lamented the behaviour of Opposition MPs. &ldquo;Even schoolchildren now question Parliament&rsquo;s decorum. They don&rsquo;t allow discussions on India&rsquo;s space achievements. The public is watching,&rdquo; he said.
Despite repeated appeals for calm, protests stalled proceedings until later in the day. Alongside the Gaming Bill, reports on agriculture, cybercrime, education, housing, aviation, and consumer affairs were tabled.
With online gaming expanding rapidly in India, the Bill is expected to face rigorous scrutiny in the committee stages, balancing innovation with social safeguards.
