A massive blast at the Nowgam police station on the outskirts of Srinagar late Friday night killed at least nine people and left several others injured. Most of the victims were police personnel and forensic staff who were handling a large cache of seized explosives.
Authorities confirmed that 24 police officials and three civilians were admitted to city hospitals. Seven bodies were recovered from the spot, while the remains of two more victims were found later. The identities of the deceased are still being established.
<h3 data-start="1043" data-end="1082">Faridabad Link to the Explosion</h3>
Investigators revealed that the explosion occurred while officials were examining explosives seized from Faridabad in Haryana. The material was linked to an uncovered &lsquo;white-collar&rsquo; terror module. Nearly 360 kg of chemicals and explosive substances had been recovered from a rented house belonging to the arrested doctor, Muzammil Ganaie.
Part of the seized material had been stored at the Forensic Lab, while the majority remained inside the Nowgam police station, where a primary case related to the terror module was registered. The powerful blast caused extensive damage to the building and hampered quick rescue attempts due to repeated minor explosions that followed.
<h3 data-start="1754" data-end="1793">Earlier Threats and Poster Case</h3>
Just weeks earlier, threatening posters targeting police personnel had appeared in Bunpora, Nowgam. Authorities launched an investigation and identified three suspects, Arif Nisar Dar, Yasir-ul-Ashraf, and Maqsood Ahmad Dar, who were later linked to earlier stone-pelting cases. Their interrogation led police to Maulvi Irfan Ahmad, a former paramedic turned preacher from Shopian, accused of radicalising medical professionals and distributing the posters.
The probe expanded to Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where two more doctors, including Ganaie and Shaheen Sayeed, were arrested. A large stock of chemicals such as ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and sulphur was also recovered.
<h3 data-start="2488" data-end="2521">Red Fort Blast Connection</h3>
Investigators also found that the recent car explosion near Delhi&rsquo;s Red Fort, which killed 11 people, was connected to the same Faridabad terror module. The car&rsquo;s driver, Umar un-Nabi, was associated with Al-Falah University. Following this, the National Investigation Agency joined the probe, identifying multiple doctors linked to the network.
Delhi Police have increased scrutiny of the university after the involvement of several of its medical staff, including Umar, Muzammil, and Shaheen Shahid.
