The Madhya Pradesh government has withdrawn its controversial order restricting electricity supply to farmers after facing strong criticism from the opposition Congress and farming groups.
The earlier directive, issued on November 3 by Chief General Manager (CGM) A. A. K. Jain of the Madhya Pradesh Kshetra Vidyut Vitran Company, had instructed that electricity for agricultural feeders should not exceed 10 hours per day. The order also warned that exceeding the time limit would lead to salary deductions for operators and action against senior power department officials.
However, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav clarified on Wednesday that his government never intended to impose limits on power supply for agricultural purposes. He said that the officer responsible for issuing the circular has been suspended and that strict action would follow.
&ldquo;There will be no restriction on electricity for agricultural needs. Our government is fully committed to ensuring adequate power supply to farmers. The official who issued this misleading order has already been punished,&rdquo; Yadav stated.
The revoked order had further mentioned that even during high-demand situations such as when soil moisture increases power consumption supply should not exceed 10 hours. Any violation of this condition was to be considered a breach of rules.
The Congress Party condemned the earlier circular, accusing the ruling BJP government of failing to provide sufficient power to farmers and claiming that many were already receiving only seven to eight hours of electricity daily.
Following widespread backlash, the Energy Department issued a fresh directive on Wednesday nullifying the previous order.
With this decision, the state government aims to reaffirm its support for the agricultural sector and assure farmers that uninterrupted electricity will continue to be provided during the critical irrigation season.
