A young man from Morbi in Gujarat has found himself caught in the Russia&ndash;Ukraine conflict after allegedly being forced into the Russian army under false charges. Sahil Mohammed Hussain, who had gone to Russia for higher education, is currently in the custody of the Ukrainian military after surrendering near the border.
Sahil was pursuing his studies in Russia while working part-time with a courier company to support his expenses. According to his account, Russian authorities detained him during a routine check and falsely accused him of drug smuggling. He was then given a stark choice: face a long prison sentence or join the Russian military to fight in the war against Ukraine. Under pressure, he agreed to sign an army contract.
After receiving barely 15 days of basic weapons training, Sahil was sent directly to the Ukraine border. Faced with imminent danger, he chose to surrender to Ukrainian forces instead of participating in combat. Ukrainian authorities have confirmed that he is safe and allowed him to record a video message appealing to the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help.
The incident has left Sahil&rsquo;s family in Morbi deeply distressed. His mother has approached a Delhi court seeking legal intervention to bring her son back to India, with the matter scheduled for hearing in February 2026.
Meanwhile, India&rsquo;s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has stated that the government remains in constant touch with Russian authorities. Diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the release and safe return of all Indian nationals reportedly trapped in the Russian army. Sahil has also urged other Indian youths to avoid falling for job or salary-related offers in Russia.
