The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a clarification following protests outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, stating that no attempt was made to breach the premises or create a security threat.
Responding to reports circulating in sections of the Bangladeshi media, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that a small group of around 20 to 25 individuals had gathered outside the High Commission on December 20 to protest the killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh&rsquo;s Mymensingh district. The demonstrators also raised concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the neighbouring country.
The MEA said the protest was brief and peaceful, and that local police personnel present at the spot dispersed the group within minutes. It added that there was no effort to cross the perimeter fence or disrupt security at any point. Visual records of the incident are publicly available, the ministry noted, reiterating India&rsquo;s commitment to safeguarding foreign diplomatic missions in line with the Vienna Convention.
The protests in New Delhi came amid escalating unrest in Bangladesh following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi, a spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, was critically injured in an assassination attempt in Dhaka on December 12 and was later flown to Singapore for treatment. He succumbed to his injuries earlier this week, according to official confirmation.
His death triggered widespread protests across Bangladesh, including in Dhaka and surrounding areas, after the Yunus-led interim government confirmed the incident and pledged strict action against those responsible.
Amid the unrest, Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old Hindu youth, was lynched by a mob over alleged blasphemy allegations, and his body was reportedly set on fire. The incident sparked strong reactions in India, leading to demonstrations outside the Bangladesh High Commission in the national capital.
