Kothamangalam police in Kerala have detained Ramees, a resident of Paravoor and temporary staff at Kochi Airport, over the suicide of 23-year-old Sona Eldhose, a Teacher&rsquo;s Training Course student.
According to Sona&rsquo;s mother, her daughter had been in a relationship with Ramees, who allegedly pressured her to convert to Islam before marriage. She claimed that Sona was locked up and beaten last week after resisting attempts to take her to Ponnani for the conversion.
Sona&rsquo;s death note, recovered by police, accuses Ramees of physical assault, mental harassment, and coercion. She wrote that his family insisted on religious conversion, warning marriage would be impossible otherwise.
Investigators revealed WhatsApp messages where Sona told Ramees she might take her own life, to which he allegedly replied, &ldquo;go ahead.&rdquo; Police say they also have proof of assault.
The relationship began during college but reportedly became abusive. Despite a prior arrest of Ramees in an immoral trafficking case, Sona forgave him. Recently, he allegedly confined her at his home, assaulted her, and tried to take her for conversion. When she refused, he allegedly told her to die.
Police have upgraded the case from unnatural death to abetment of suicide, with his family members likely to be named co-accused. The incident has sparked public outrage over allegations of coercion, abuse, and religious pressure.
