Authorities in Madhya Pradesh&rsquo;s Indore have confirmed three deaths linked to a diarrhoea outbreak caused by contaminated drinking water in the Bhagirathpura area, even as the cause of five additional fatalities remains under investigation. In response, one official has been dismissed and two others suspended for alleged negligence.
Health officials said a large-scale survey was conducted across 2,703 households, with nearly 12,000 residents examined following reports of vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. As per official data, at least 111 people were hospitalised, while over 1,100 reported mild symptoms after consuming contaminated water.
The confirmed victims have been identified as Nandlal (70), Urmila Yadav (60), and Tara Kori (65). Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the deaths of Gomti Rawat (50), Uma Kori (31), Santosh Bigolia, Manjula (74), and Seema Prajapat (50) were also linked to the outbreak.
Officials suspect that leakage in a main water pipeline running beneath a toilet led to sewage mixing with the drinking water supply. Following this, the Indore Municipal Corporation took disciplinary action against officials responsible for the affected zone. A deputy engineer was removed from service, while a zonal officer and an assistant engineer were placed under suspension.
A three-member inquiry committee has been formed under senior bureaucrat Navjeevan Panwar to examine lapses and fix accountability. The panel includes senior engineering and medical experts.
Residents of Bhagirathpura accused the civic body of ignoring repeated complaints about foul-smelling water and clogged pipelines. Several locals claimed the water supply on December 25 had an unusual odour and that illnesses spiked soon after.
State urban development authorities said more than 70 water samples have been collected for testing. Repair work is underway, and potable water is being supplied through tankers. Medical camps have also been set up in the area to monitor and control the outbreak.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of those who have died, as the administration continues efforts to contain the situation and prevent further casualties.
