The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is poised to deliver a significant boost to India&rsquo;s mineral sector, particularly the aluminium industry, by enhancing market access, cutting tariffs, and fostering R&amp;D collaborations.
Speaking at a Ministry of Mines webinar, Mines Secretary V.L. Kantha Rao underscored opportunities for Indian exporters, highlighting the need for targeted roadshows in the UK to map product demand and strengthen trade links. Industry leaders from NALCO, BALCO, Hindalco, and various associations welcomed the pact, stressing its potential to increase competitiveness in the UK market.
Under the agreement, India will slash tariffs on 90% of British products, while the UK will remove duties on 99% of Indian exports. This is expected to benefit sectors like textiles, leather, and agriculture, alongside lowering costs for imported goods such as Scotch whisky, gin, luxury cars, cosmetics, and medical devices.
Experts also pointed out that the aluminium primary and secondary industries could gain significant market traction, while joint research initiatives will help drive innovation in mining and material recycling. Over 230 industry representatives participated in the virtual meet, signalling strong industry interest.
