Protests continued across several Indian cities on Tuesday following the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage and further strained already sensitive India&ndash;Bangladesh relations. Demonstrations were reported from New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Agartala and parts of Madhya Pradesh, with Hindu organisations demanding justice and stronger protection for minorities in the neighbouring country.
The protests were triggered by the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu garment factory worker, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Bangladesh&rsquo;s Mymensingh district on December 18 over accusations of blasphemy. Officials said his body was later tied to a tree and set on fire, intensifying anger and condemnation on both sides of the border.
As street demonstrations gathered momentum, India and Bangladesh exchanged diplomatic protests. Bangladesh summoned India&rsquo;s High Commissioner in Dhaka, conveying grave concern over demonstrations outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and vandalism reported at a visa centre in Siliguri.
Later in the day, Bangladesh&rsquo;s High Commissioner in India was called to the external affairs ministry in New Delhi, where Indian officials underscored the need for a proper investigation into the killing of Bangladeshi radical student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Indian authorities also cautioned against unverified allegations blaming India for his death, noting that such claims had fuelled anti-India protests in Bangladesh, including a recent attempt by a mob to storm the Indian assistant high commission in Chittagong.
In New Delhi, hundreds of protesters led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal gathered near the heavily fortified Bangladesh High Commission, waving saffron flags and raising slogans demanding accountability. Police deployed around 1,500 personnel and multiple layers of barricades, preventing protesters from approaching the diplomatic mission. Effigies of Bangladesh&rsquo;s interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus were burnt during the demonstration.
In Kolkata, members of Bangiyo Hindu Jagran and other groups protested near the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission. Tensions escalated due to the large turnout, prompting police to resort to a lathi charge. Similar protests were held in Mumbai, where several demonstrators were detained, and in Hyderabad, where organisers warned of intensified agitation if justice was not ensured.
Political leaders across India strongly condemned the killing. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma linked the outrage to broader concerns over illegal immigration, while BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari described the lynching as a &ldquo;shameful act&rdquo; and accused Bangladesh&rsquo;s interim government of failing to safeguard minorities. Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal alleged a larger conspiracy behind the unrest, while Congress leader Supriya Shrinate urged the Indian government to take a firm diplomatic stand to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
Responding to the backlash, Muhammad Yunus expressed profound sorrow over the killing and extended condolences to the victim&rsquo;s family. Bangladesh&rsquo;s de facto education minister CR Abrar visited the family and termed the incident a heinous criminal act with no justification.
Bangladesh&rsquo;s interim government said 12 people have been arrested in connection with the lynching and assured that the case would be pursued fully and without exception.
