Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday made a startling declaration, calling singer Zubeen Garg&rsquo;s death a &ldquo;murder&rdquo; rather than a mishap. The Chief Minister said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case would submit its chargesheet by early December, pending approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
&ldquo;I will not refer to Zubeen Garg&rsquo;s death as a mishap today. We need to submit the chargesheet in Zubeen Garg&rsquo;s murder before December 17. I have given the target that it be submitted by December 8,&rdquo; Sarma said, adding, &ldquo;Yesterday, I apprised Home Minister Amit Shah as well, so that the approval may be granted quickly.&rdquo;
Zubeen Garg, 52, passed away in Singapore on September 19, where he was attending the North East India Festival as a cultural ambassador. He reportedly lost consciousness while swimming during a yacht outing and was declared dead at Singapore General Hospital. The Assam Police has registered a CID case under criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and causing death by negligence, now upgraded to murder.
Five individuals, including Garg&rsquo;s manager, the event organiser, two bandmates, and his cousin, have been arrested. Singapore Police, however, maintain that &ldquo;no foul play is suspected&rdquo; under their preliminary probe. The SIT&rsquo;s findings&nbsp; and the Chief Minister&rsquo;s assertion, have added a new dimension to a case that straddles two nations and two legal systems.
